High school prom is a major milestone just before graduating. It is a time to celebrate all of your high school memories with one big fashionable party. It is supposed to be a joyous occasion, but the fun and excitement was stopped for 18-year-old senior Mireya Briceno.

Briceno, who attends Muskegon High School, along with her mother thought she took precaution and followed all rules when picking her prom dress. Unfortunately, Mireya was kicked out of her high school prom some time after being let in. Her mother, Connie Briceno, recently spoke out about the incident.

The dress code for the Muskegon High School Prom specifically stated check mark oneunder ladies that backless dresses were acceptable (Photo: Connie Briceno)
“The guidelines specifically said backless dresses are acceptable. The rules stated the dress needed to adhere to the ‘fingertip rule’ – meaning the dress had to hit below your fingertip when standing with her arms by your side. They also said no midriff showing, which to me means stomach. And they said the words ‘backless dresses are acceptable.’” - Connie Briceno to Yahoo Parenting
Mireya entered prom, removed her jacket and began taking photos. After some time she was approached by a teacher and asked to leave. Connie says Mireya’s boyfriend and date, who attends another school, asked the teacher if she could wear his jacket, but she was told she could only put on her own coat, or go home and change into a different dress. Without argument she left and immediately called her mother crying.
“Other girls were wearing similar style dresses, like dresses with cutouts, and dresses with sheer lining on the midriff,” Connie says. “Why were they allowed to stay and my daughter wasn’t?”

Muskegon High School Principal Brad Perkins told Yahoo Parenting he wasn’t at liberty to discuss issues related to students over the phone and declined to comment on the dress code violation.
She's missed out on memories of a lifetime with friends that she has spent high school days with. Mireya will get to go to prom again at her boyfriend's school. She's stated she will be wearing a new dress.
