April 2015 will mark the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

In many parts of the word the Armenian Genocide evokes contentious debate. The Armenian Genocide in 1915, is the forced and systematic murder of an estimated 1.5 million Armenians by Ottoman Turks. Many countries in Europe recognize the mass killing as genocide. Historians also recognize this event as one of the first genocides in the 20th century.

Turkey, the country that perpetrated this genocide, maintains that the killings were casualties of war and not genocide.

On Sunday, while celebrating the Armenian Catholic rite in St. Peter's Basilica. the pope said: “Concealing or denying evil is like allowing a wound to keep bleeding without bandaging it.”

These statements were met with disdain from Turkish representatives. The country’s foreign ministry announced it was recalling its ambassador for consultations, and also summoned the Vatican’s envoy.
"Who after all speaks today of the annihilation of the Armenians?" - Hitler, August 22, 1939
The United States has yet to formally recognize the 1915 Armenian Genocide. April 24, 2015 will mark the officially commemorated anniversary of this genocide.
