As young, educated, black females we often look at the world around us and wonder where do we fit in? In the present, I am not just one classification, characteristics, or attribute, but I am always seen as a black female. This took a while for me to accept. Not that I see anything wrong with my brown skin, but being an adult forced me to confront how others view me, first and perhaps only in the context of my race then my gender. I then began to take extreme notice to how black women were perceived in various outlets in American society and the world as a whole. After speaking with many close friends and family of diverse backgrounds I came to the conclusion that black women need to be represented in more positive lights in all aspects. We are often reduced to sluts, whores, baby mommas, the educated but too-independent black woman, the loud mouth, or the worst "the angry black woman". In coming together to form this site about our shared experiences as black women, I thought what better name for our blog than just how they view us anyways. 2blkgrls.
